Kay Prior animal portrait, landscape and wildlife artist

Pet portrait Artist

I have always considered myself blessed with a deep love and respect for animals (especially dogs) and it was my good fortune to grow up in their company.

I  inherited a natural ability to draw from my father and spent long hours as a child drawing animals for fun, as I grew up I continued to draw but became increasingly curious about colour and began to experiment with watercolour and gouache, I spent a year on a local art foundations course which gave me access to an even broader range of  methods and materials and   increased my appetite for variety.

My main subject matter continued to include dogs and cats and I discovered that this was sadly frowned upon by the art establishment so I withdrew from my art education and quietly continued to hone my skills in private.

Then came my family.........  many hard but fun years raising my two sons and working at a succession of non art related jobs before finally the opportunity to devote my time and energy to  my artwork arose, then I began taking commissions to paint pastel pet portraits and have never looked back.

These days I am always busy with a steady flow of commissions in my order book and often have a waiting list of clients for  paintings of pets in Pastels, Watercolour, Oils, Graphite and even recently Acrylics. In between and alongside these commissioned works I still find time to work on original landscapes and wildlife paintings which I exhibit and sell locally.

I am happily settled in a beautiful part of East Sussex with my husband and a small menagerie of pets, where I enjoy the luxury of both the coast and the surrounding countryside to fill me with inspiration.
